Deodar cedar, or just "deodar" (the name used in its native India), is a large stately conifer with horizontal spreading branches and a conical shape. It can grow to 150 ft. tall with a 40 ft. spread at ground level. Deodar is native to the Himalayas, where it grows at elevations of 3,500 to 12,000 ft. above sea level.
The health benefits of Cedarwood Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as an antiseborrhoeic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic, astringent, diuretic, emenagogue, expectorant, insecticidal, sedative and fungicidal substance. The oil's antifungal properties heal athlete's foot and psoriasis dermatitis. Inhaling Cedarwood breaks up phlegm and mucus. American Indians used it to break up colds.
Cedarwood Essential Oil has an earthy aroma that is soothing and grounding. Both Cedarwood and Cedar Atlas have their own distinctive scents. The Egyptians used cedarwood in the embalming process and as a perfume ingredient. Often cedarwood oil is steam distilled from the foliage, wood, and conifers of the tree. This particular oil has been hydro distilled. This process is similar to steam distillation but allows for a shorter distillation time and is especially useful when dealing with woody substances.
